CHiMere

Research Group on Cultural Histories of Magic

The objective of the research centre CHiMere. The Cultural Histories of Magic research group aims to facilitate informal discussion on the historical development of magical beliefs and practices. The research centre will be open to interested persons of all academic degrees, as well as members from other fields. In particular, the Department of Cultures and Civilisations at the University of Verona is believed to be an ideal environment for the development of a range of interests that interweave different disciplinary areas. These include history, the history of science and culture, anthropology, literature, art history, archaeology, music, cinema, theatre, linguistics and others. These disciplines can be involved in pathways that develop analyses of the primary object of CHiMere.
The research area of magic is approached from a broad perspective encompassing cultural and social history from antiquity to the present. The objective is to examine a range of topics, including rituals, the history of emotions, the nuances of social class and social stratification, the cognitive aspects of magical beliefs, the material and corporeal dimensions of representation, and the multifaceted constructions of relations with the otherworldly.
The objective is to examine universal historical dynamics while considering specific historical and geographical contexts, with the aim of gaining insight into long-lasting phenomena and identifying trans-historical trends. This objective will be pursued through the organisation of seminars, both in person and online, and through the proposal of collective readings and research.
In order to facilitate research presentations and seminar activities, it would be beneficial to involve colleagues from both universities in the Veneto region and from national and international universities. This would allow for the creation of a regional network of scholars working on similar issues, as well as for the expansion of stimuli and connections. The meetings will be held in two formats: in person and via Zoom. This dual format will allow for broader participation, including members in other countries. The meetings will occur bimonthly. In addition to these meetings, thematic seminar cycles and events open to the public will be held.
